Senile atrophy of the human lacrimal gland: the contribution of chronic inflammatory disease.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Histological examination of 99 human lacrimal glands showed a relationship between atrophy of the secretory acini and secretory duct obstruction, ascending periductal fibrosis, and obliteration of the adjacent blood vessels caused by lymphocytic and polymorphonuclear inflammation. Investigation of the subgroups of the B lymphocytic series by immunohistochemistry did not show any statistical change with age, sex, fibrosis, or lymphocytic inflammation. The concept of senile atrophy occurring as a result of senescent involution of the lacrimal gland is challenged on the basis of the histological findings.

Morphological and histological study of superior lacrimal gland of third eyelid in camel (Camelus dromedarius)
In this study ten pairs of superior gland of third eyelid of 10 adult male camels free of apparent ocular disease were examined to compare the normal anatomical and histological properties of these glands. After dissecting, all of the glands were characterized and measured (length and width) on both the left and right side. In the camels, the superior gland of the third eyelid was oval shaped a...
متن کاملMorphological Changes of Rabbit Lacrimal Gland Cells from Amiodarone Administration
Background: Amiodarone is a drug that is used for treatment of cardiac arrhythmia after cardiac ischemia. This drug as b blocker decreases arrhythmia rate but it has many side effects on different tissues. Since there are rare reports about changes of lacrimal glands, this research has been carried out to study the morphological and ultrastructural changes of lacrimal gland cells after amiodaro...
متن کاملUnusual Involvement of IgG4-Related Sclerosing Disease in Lacrimal and Submandibular Glands and Extraocular Muscles
Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis, also known as Kuttner tumor, is a chronic inflammatory disease of the salivary glands that is reported in a few cases in medical literature. Recent reports suggest that certain aspects of sclerosing diseases, including chronic sclerosing sialadenitis or dacryoadenitis, should be classified under immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related sclerosing disease based on immuno...

logical findings of IgG4-related disease irrespective of the organ of origin. However, hyalinized dense fibrosis as observed in cases 1 and 2 is not typical for IgG4-related diseases to our knowledge. We speculated that this difference might depend on anatomical characteristics of the lacrimal gland (eg, tightly surrounded by muscles and bone) or the duration of this disease. In addition, it is...
متن کاملFibrosis of the thyroid and lacrimal glands.
HASHIMOTO (1912) remarked on the similarity of the form of thyroiditis, described by him and now known by his name, to the lesions of Mikulicz's disease, which include a chronic inflammatory reaction in the lacrimal glands. Only recently, however, has evidence accumulated of a true association between non-infective chronic inflammatory lesions of the thyroid and lacrimal glands (Anderson, Gray,...
